XP Black Screen

    I have a problem with xp, after i reboot shows all text info, about motherboard etc, before it gets to windows xp logo screen, just shows black screen, goes no further, has never done this before, why now, also keeps giving me file protection errors have to have the cd in drive all the time,
    have to reinstall to get windows up and running, have a boot cd, just takes me to command prompt though, running windowsxp sp1, any ideas on what to do if i boot with cd and choose repair windows installation from command prompt, ie what commands to type in to fix it>>>

    Hi Hoodlum and welcome to major geeks :)
    It would be wise in your case to boot from the CD and have windows repair the installation. If you do not have much on your system it may be better at this time to reformat your drive and then make sure your firewall is on along with your anti virus and then download the service pack 2 which has just been released. If you are unsure at any point then do please post back
