Ok here's the truth. Surfing porn; with Zone Alarm in max protect settings; Spyblaster set for max protection; AVG, Spybot, and Lavasoft run w/in last week and clean. Somebody pops in; I switch off monitor; they don't leave, so I exit with the power button.

On 1st re-boot attempt, XP chks dkk, I hit F8 to enter safe mode. Black screen shows up with SYS32 files and stops on Mup. Each time I re-try, it does the same old thing.

I'v read some similar posts here. They say a clean re-install of Windows XP is probably the only fix.

    Is that true?

    Thanks

You try "Last Known Good Config"?
Does safemode work at all? At what point does the OS restart? After the scrolling windows screen? Need more info. I haven't had to reinstall an OS in over a year, and I work on some messed up computers (have a side business after my main job fixing people's PC's, so I see a lot of machines)

Thank you for the reply. I've tried to start XP in safe mode and in last good system restore point. When I hit enter on either of these, I get a Scrolling black & white screen; it begins to roll, then stops and locks up. Power button to shut off. Restart. Hit F8 at boot screen and it takes me back to check disk, then B&W screen to choose Normal Mode, or Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with command Prompt, et cetera. Hit one of those, dosen't matter which one. Then it locks up again while scrolling though SYS32 files.

I've gotten into the Bios set-up, but don't know which parameters to change, if any.

I created an XP boot floppy as instructed by: www.theeldergeek.com/create_xp_boot_disk.htm.

Then I tried to boot the thing from the floppy.

It started, then went into chkdsk.

At the end of that, two messages appeared:

    1. size of pagefile.sys entry is not valid.

    2. \WindowsDump60fc.temp cross-linked on allocation unit 515222.

Then it locked-up again, and would go no further.

Thanks for any guidance you may be able to offer.

    Sincerely,
    BrickDiamond

    Thanks for the Reply.

I do not have the XP cd rom, only a floppy boot disk.

I'll keep trying, until I break down and pay a shop to fix it.

    Much Appreciated,
    BrickDiamond

The repair installation is asking for the product key, which I obviously don't have, since it is borrowed from a friend.

    Too Bad.
