XP Bootup Crash

After a power cut where I live cut out my XP computer, it now crashes on the first BIOS screen with the American Megatrends logo on bootup. It does not respond to anything, except the power off button. However, after having switched it off, if I switch the computer back immediately afterwards or within several minutes of doing so, it boots up through successfully and works perfectly. It only crashes on startup after being switched off for a while. Is it a power issue...?

First option would be to reset your Bios/CMOS, easiest way is once PC is off with some tissue in hand take the motherboard battery out for a few mins then clean the battery with tissue ( removes the grease that your finger leave on the battery contacts and this can hinder transfer of juice from batt > mobo ) and replace, then boot up again.

I withdrew the CMOS battery, wiped it as it was mildly dirty, and inserted it back in again. This resetted the memory to default, although unfortunately I still suffer the problem.

Next steps would be to change the battery for a new one and if you can get hold of a PSU to test in place of yours then you will narrow down any power supply issues.

Welcome to MG. If power outages are a regular occurence in your area, it might pay to you to buy a UPS (uninterruptable Power Supply) for your desktop. Blackouts, power spikes or brownouts can do lots of damage to PC's. Bazza

First and only power cut I've had for a long, long time. But thanks for the suggestion...
