my xp pro cd is a no activation required one. it has no eula agreement screen at the beginning or a partition, then request for which hard drive to use. is this normal? thanks.

Yes, I believe so. sounds like an OEM. Install to C to avoid problems. I have a 3 disk restore of SP1 for a Compaq laptop that doesn't require activation, but then again Microsoft checks to see if it is Genuine when I want to update it. Does it show more than one drive? If it does and you are not using two drives it is probably due to formatting to NTFS or files the manufacturer has on a separate partition for troubleshooting purposes.
