Hello everyone. Nice to be back.
Anyway, my computer is becoming a major pain now. Just yesterday I tried to turn on my computer. Well, when the computer tried to log onto XP, the computer just froze. I tried to get into safe mode, but every time I tried, the computer restarted itself. I went back to try and log on reguarly, but the computer freezes every time right before it brings up the XP login. So, I cant log on, I cant run safe mode. I first thought that the hard drive blew, but that was debunked when I could access the OS on my second hard drive. I tried to access the files from there, but it was denied due to me making my account private :)mad:   ). Does anybody know how to remedy this? Cheers, Halojedi20.

Thats not going to happen. I'm running XP Pro on the downed hard drive and when I tried to reinstall, the DVDrom drive and the CDRWdrive wouldnt read the XP Pro cd (even when booting from those drives directly). I do have an XP Home cd which I tried to use on my original hard drive to see if I could access the files on my downed one, but the files are locked, so that wasnt going to happen. Every time I load the XP Pro cd it loads the drives and then never gives me a prompt to install, repair, ect. It just freezes at Starting Windows...

Let me see if I got this right ....you have two hard drives ...one has xp which won't load....the other has ? (xp home?) ....you can boot to the second hard drive but not access the first (can "see" the files, but can't access them) ....now for the question:
Is the xp version on the first one a legit version? (MS$ has a nice way of looping your system when it detects that it isn't a registered version).

All of my OSs are legit. I had a copy of home and a copy of pro when I wanted to upgrade.

Sorry, had to ask....if you go to msconfig in the home ...does the xp pro show up in boot.ini?

No, heres and update. I guess in my furry of activity last night, I replaced the pro with home. So, on the new hard drive, I have two copies of home and on the old hard drive, I have a copy of home. The thing I need to do is to access my documents from the xp pro (which is now stuck between both of the homes). Is there any way to bypass the access denied (private folders) warning and access the files? Then i can just wipe the drives and start over.

    Let's give this a go:
Since Home Edition is "secure", it lets you log into the Administrator account in safe mode with no password. From there, you can do anything you'd like.
go to user accounts make a new account password protected then go to configuartion panel and go to users and passwords be sure that you are admin on you own pc ;). Then login with that account go to properties of that HD and check if the user that you have made have full access to the drive.

I accessed Admin and tried to access the old files. Accessed Denied. I tried changing permissions, but it still wouldnt have it and denied me. Any more suggestions?

Do you have the exact same user account on both pro and home with the same admin rights? Do you know what user account you used for those files? You may only be able to access with the exact same account and password.

Can you move the folders to the shared folder?

I'm not running Pro anymore since it got overriden by Home. The password for Pro wasnt working when I tried to log in to Pro last time, so I changed the password (in safe mode on the Home) to the same password that was on Pro. I still couldnt access the files.

If this is Home, one can change the ownership of the files, via safemode, but this option can only be accessed with the administrator account. Not the normal user account.

I tried to change ownership, but access was denied.

When you attempted to change ownership, did it immediatly tell you that access was denied? Or did it go through its paces, then you went into the folder?

Which account did you choose, to obtain the ownership?

Also, out of curiosity, can you click START, then RUN, then type in cmd (press enter).

    Type in:

    cacls /? (press enter).

Do you get a help list for cacls?

Actually, bring me through how to change ownership. I tried to make the folder availble on the network, but couldnt.

Network? Are you trying to access folder from a remote location? If so, then you need to give the remote account permissions to the machine in question.

No, I'm on the said computer with the locked files. I was in safe mode and tried to change the folder itself to a shared folder, but that wouldnt happen. I tried the cacls in dos and got a bunch of stuff i dont even know. How do you change the ownership of the folder? Does it matter that the folder was on a different OS before?

It would if the "locked" files where ntfs and your trying with a fat format.

Ahh, if this is the case, then if running xp home, one needs to run, convert c: /fs:ntfs

No, every thing is NTFS. Can you access permissions from files locked by a different OS?

Can you get into explorer and navigate to the folder and right click it and open security?

    @theefool - great minds, eh?

If you get Access Denied in WinXP Pro you may have to “take ownership” of the file/folder before it can be accessed. First of all go to Folder Options, View Tab and in the Advanced Settings at the end, untick “Use simple file sharing”, which will allow the Security tab to be shown in the file’s properties. Also, in Folder options, make sure hidden and system files can be viewed if the file/folder you want doesn‘t appear.

To take ownership of the file (it’s best done at the folder level), right-click it, Properties, Security Tab, add your user name, fill in all the permissions and Apply. You can now access it.

WinXP Home is different, you have to boot in safe mode to access the Security Tab or this site may help http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm
