I had 30 days of restore points. XP automatically eliminated all but 6 of them. Is this typical?

All the info explained here on system restore Ex:
    * By default, System Restore will automatically delete restore points that are older than 90 days.
    * Restore points will also be deleted when the when the amount of disk space set to hold them become full. At this point restore points will deleted on a FIFO (first in - first out) basis.
    * Installing a large application suit such as a full install of MS Office can cause the creation of a a very large restore point(s), which can result in the deletion of older restore points. The same can be true after installing a large amount of updates via Windows Updates or Microsoft Update.

Doing a repair install will also reset the system restore point.

If you want to keep more restore points than you are now you can change the amount of space used for them by opening System Restore, select the drive , click Settings and move the slider to the space you want to give to restore points.

Just my opinion. I have never used the restore settings. Why waste valuable disk space for something you may never use?

Unless one has a large drive that is. Like Toni_1947....12%=22GB??? I'm guessing a 200 GB drive?

Good guess...that's ME. But I used 10% of my drive on an old Gateway Laptop that had a tiny hard drive in comparison.
System Restore is a WONDERFUL thing if you like to try out new software or Tweaks or just change things around. It has saved my bacon more than a few times...even after a fouled up Windows Update.
I would never be without it, myself.

Agree with Toni, 100%. System Restore has saved me on more than 1 occasion.
I have, however, moved the slider back to 3% (or 1.444 gigs) on my 60 gig drive, XP Pro.

I usually create a new restore point, weekly, as part of my PC housekeeping. Sometimes I create new ones when I think an install, or uninstall, may go bad, just in case. Bazza

PS: I do clean old ones reasonably regulalrly if I am satisfied that my PC is behaving itself. Restore point will automatically create a new one anyhow, after you wipe the old ones, when you turn System Restore back on, as part of its safety workings.
I always create another one straight away, as well. Baz
