XP doesn't start up.

hi every one!

a friend has done something stupid to his laptop :foolish : he has thrown it on a sofa and now when switch it on, windows begins to start up but then the screen turn into a blurry mushy stripes and hangs :confused. i've tried to start it in safe mode but the same story, as the safe mode starts to load screen turns into this mushy screen. is it something that can be fixed with a simple reinstalling windows or he's done his laptop in for good?
