Hi, I have a HP zx5060 with a Toshiba SD-R6252 dvd+rw in it. I had troubles burning with nero until I updated the firmware to version 1A14 1.00
. Then I had to reinstall windows xp because of unrelated problems. Ever since I haven't been able to burn again without errors. I tried to reinstall the firmware update, but it says I already have it. I looked in the device manager and it shows a 2001 version, (see attachment) I uninstalled it, rebooted, it came back! How do I install the newest version over it???

Your graphic is showing the currently-installed device driver. Firmware is one thing and a device driver is another. If you updated the firmware of the drive, reinstalling Windows will not affect it-- it willl stay the same until you flash it with a different firmware revision.

Check in Device Manager and, under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, find which IDE channel your drive is attached to. If you can't tell which-- either the Primary or the Secondary-- just make sure in each's Properties, under the Advanced Properties tab, that the Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if Available" for all devices.

All my optical drives list that same driver. Maybe the media you're using? Have you changed brands coincidentally? Admittedly, I don't burn media too often, so...

I have that same drive, and a similar model laptop.

What is the error you are getting, what version of Nero, and do you have any other burning programs installed?

Its nero 6.6.03 the newest version, it appears to be buggy, maybe I'll try reinstalling it.. Its the only burner I put back on after reinstalling windowsxp. I'm getting write errors I didn't get before reinstalling windows. The drive doesn't even read the dvds as well now. Sometimes it says the dvd is empty, then if I reboot it plays ok...???

Well, if you uninstall Nero and find that DVDs work ok, then I think that would point the finger at Nero.

is this the same driver you're using?...Existing drivers:
    File 'Drivers\atapi.sys': Ver=5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Let me double check. I am sure it is.

    Yes, it is.

Although keep in mind, that driver in question is for the IDE channel.

Try completely removing the physical drive and the drivers(check in safe mode to be sure they're completely gone). Reboot and then check everywhere(including BIOS) to make sure your system has no knowledge of the drive. Then reinstall everything just like you did when you fist got the drive.:)

Duh.... you probably have already done that! Sorry!

Not only that, removing items from device manager, doesn't remove any drivers, at all.

It simply re-enumerates the device. If the registry still contains pointers to the other drivers, they still load.

I think I might have found the problem. Winfax was running in the background. Anyways, I disabled it and now things seem to burn fine!? we'll seeee. thanks for your input!
