    Hello all-

My stupid version of XP PRO, which I have wasted about $300 upon, isn't working again. A couple of .nls files are missing or corrupt (had this prob about a week ago and fixed it by installing the missing files back into my system32 folder via Recovery Console.)

New issue: after I launch Recovery Console, and try to expand the file(s)off of the XP disk, (expand d:\i386\c_1252.nl_ c:\windows\system32) I get an error message that there's no disk in the drive. If I type d: and look at d, same thing-no disk. Also, my drive is "dead"; (not on boot up; only after Recovery Console is up and running) that is, if I hit the "eject" button, nothing happens. It's as if Recovery Console kills the power to the drive after using the drive to install itself.......echoes of Kubrick?????

There are instructions on the Microlost website on how to resolve this prob if the file is missing or corrupt. In my case, the file is missing altogether (last time, actually, a couple of .nls files were missing. I believe that the other one was c_437.nls). Don't know if this info matters or not but there it is. The instructions tell you to rename the file(s) .old but since the're not even there I skipped this step altogether last time.

How can I get this worthless piece of crap $3000 paperweight to see the CD drive? (Obviously, the drive itself works fine, 'cause I can get into Recovery Console).

Second, why do I keep having problems with this file? Why is the c_1252.nls file missing again? Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks again for helping me support a product which I purchased legally and which the manufacturer of fails to support adequately. I'm glad you guys are here, 'cause the last time I contacted Microsoft (why would a man, any man, willingly and enthusiastically embrace the words "Micro" or "soft"? Most men are loath to be associated with either. So not only is it really small, it doesn't perform..............) any way, last time I contacted them, well, I'm still waiting for an answer!!

I apologize for the digression. thanks again for all the help.

Do this once you are into the recovery console and have selected the Windows installation you want to repair; type map at the command prompt hit ENTER and make a note of the drive letter the Recovery Console is assigning to your CD-ROM. It may be reassigning drive letters each time you enter the recovery console.
