Friends computer running xp wont bring up windows at start up . Blue screen comes up for a second .Wont go in safe mode. I put my Norton virus checker in, this came up....Windows/system/driver/fltmgr.sys ...status oxc ooooo17 windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.. I don't have a windows installation disc (preloaded).. Any easy way of fixing this? I am new to repairing computer faults so be gentle...

Right when you first power up, and right after the PC logo screen (also called the 'post' screen) start tapping the F8 key to bring up the WinXP boot options menu. Select "Disable Automatic Restart After System Failure" and boot up. The system should stop on the blue screen that's been flashing by. Note the error number, any file name if listed, and the message. Then post that info here and we'll do our best. :-D

(some quick research shows that the 0xC0000017 error is related to memory and/or virtual memory; if you could boot in safe mode to max the paging file, that would be ideal, but you can't start in safe mode :( )
