Was infected last week. Major Geeks has me in the final cleanup stages. I noticed that I do not have any sound or I can't connect to my network. The "new device" window pops up but can't help me because I don't know what info to provide. I noticed on your forum that there was some sort of scan test to help find the driver info needed? Could you help with this?

On a lot of computers the sound is a chip on the motehrboard.
You probably need to install the chipset drivers.
What is the brand and exact model of computer?

I tried to contact the person who built this computer and was unsuccessfull. I honestly have no idea what is what. Is there any way I can find this info on my comuter?

    Falconattack,

Sorry for the delay. Loaded Speccy. Went to get Summary and Speccy says it encounters a problem and has to close. It looks like all was loaded properly. So I can't run report. All I was able to get from main page is this:

Motherboard: Gigayte Technologies Co., Ltd. 81848P (Socket 478)
    Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

    Caliban,

Sorry for the dumb question. Do I down load and run these 3 items from the list(Post) or do I go to the gygabyte site to do it?

Looks like the links are live, you might be able to download them directly from the links Caliban posted.

Install the chipset (top) drivers first.

    Nope, it's not a dumb question ;)

Ah - sorry for the confusion...

Yes, those are live links - save the .exes, then run them (as Satrow mentioned, 1. Chipset 2. Audio or Ethernet 3. Audio or Ethernet)...although, if you do happen to have any problems, try the Marvell driver first - Marvell (especially Yukon) can sometimes be weird that way...

I listed the Gigabyte link merely for reference, in case we need to dig deeper...

I also went out on a limb and am assuming these drivers will work with this machine - they are the most common 81848 files, and should cause no ill effects...

And, as far as system info, you might give Everest a shot - it can sometimes load when other programs (like Speccy) cannot...the procedure would be 'Report', 'Quick Report', 'Plain Text'. Click 'File', 'Save As...'

I down loaded them, found them on my desktop, the prompt said to extract each one. I did and now I don't know what happend. Nothing is different. Still no sound. Maybe I goofed?

    Good morning...

    The procedure should be:

    1. Download the file (for example, http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_chipset_intel_inf.exe) to an easily found location.

    2. Run the executable, which is a 7-Zip self-extracting archive.

    3. The .exe will ask to extract to a location. The default is usually "C:\Users\YourName\Downloads\" - you may use this or browse to another location. Click 'extract'.

    4. Open the folder that the file was extracted to, and then run the proper 'Setup' executable for your machine.

    5. Once the Setup has run, you should get some sort of 'Setup Finished' or 'Setup Successful' message - make sure you reboot your machine before attempting any more operations.
