I've located a floppy with label of "emergency repair disc 7/20/02" and indicated for "my pc".

The pc I'm attempting to recover has XP Pro SP3 os, pc is HP Compaq

First, I would like to check the PC's date internally - is that possible?

2nd, my PC has no floppy drive (which makes me doubt whether this floppy is for the affected pc or a previous pc!) (would it matter if both pcs were XP Pro??)

the pc I'm posting from is also XP Pro SP3, but it has a floppy drive and a CD drive

Can I burn some type of CD off of this emergency repair floppy to use in the affected pc??

    Thanx

A separate but closely allied question:

As did another Major Geek reader, I have seen a reference to making a boot floppy from another pc running windows xp, if your pc won't boot.

Can we make such boot floppys (as .iso I expect)? and if so, can we get some specific instructions to do so??

I'm impressed (??) by the sheer number of XP non-boot problems that I see here at MG....so these topics should help more than just me!

No problem sach2! I went back and reread my post after seeing yours, and your link may be better if it is bootable, as it will be without any edits or batch files that the other author may have created and included.

Yeah, the process at that link is not going smoothly:

When I double click RecoveryCD.bat that's supposed to self-create the bootable .iso CD (its inside the downloaded file from that link),
and download the referenced official Windows XP SP3 Recovery file,
change its name to "BootDisk.exe" and
    put it in the file

    - I get a "BootDisk.exe is not a valid win32 application" error.

Attempting to create my own .iso file (via ImgBurn), in order to burn a CD (via ImgBurn) - gets me a non-working bootable CD.

Just use my link from post 4 (it is just the .iso). "Write Image file to Disc" option in imgburn should get it on disc.

Yes - I already had that .iso burned as a bootable disc.

It is of limited value to many people, as it does not have any XP repair files or official XP Recovery files.

And, at the moment (despite use of every password tool I can find), I cannot get past the dreaded "administator's password" in it to do anything.

Hence, my search for other viable options (if any)

I would have to answer "yes" to all your questions about the link provided.

But I have a question that I should have asked at the beginning, what exactly is it that you are trying to recover from?

Have you tried installing the Recovery Console on your problem computer and using it?

Being that it is an HP/Compaq computer, is there a recovery partition on the hard drive?

Please pardon all the questions, jut trying to get the information needed to be helpful. :)

Yes, I appreciate your help (anyone's help). As I noted elsewhere, this XP non-boot problem is apparently common, although there are an unknown number of causes...

Yeah - life couldn't be that cheap and easy. Here's a purportedly legitimate OEM CD with papers and key, for $85.

I need 50 posts in order to reply to a PM (a weird limitation)

Your offer is most gracious, but I am currently attempting a couple of fixes, so I'm going to get back to you after that.

    Thanx,

    -Doc-

    The rest of the story:

Because my dead PC contained the i386 folder and files (complete and unharmed), and because I could access that software via a bootable CD - (and glossing over 2 weeks of misery and work) I was able to create my own bootable Windows XP Pro SP2 CD complete with EULA, and do a repair / in-place upgrade to REBOOT back to my current settings and data! (One can find a couple of threads on the net about how to do all this - hint "Jimmy Carter")

Note that this is merely using my own software to recover my same PC....

Thank you to those of you who responded to my far-ranging questions over the last 2 weeks, and those who offered help (iain.t)
