Hi all iv been hunting around trying to find anyone with this similair problem but i cant quite find anyone so im just gonna make the thread so apologies if i overlooked something in the search and if this is in the wrong section.

Last week my brother called me asking me for some computer help he said he was doing some school research when his computer crashed and gave him a BSOD "irql_not_less_or_equal" error and so i told him id look at it as soon as i could so i came over here today and tried to get into safemode but that didnt work as it got another BSOD error but this time a "page_fault _in _nonpaged_area".

So at this point i wasnt sure what to do so i tried to just boot it up normally and it gives the irql error and when trying to do last good settings same thing so iv been unable to get into windows at all and im at a bit of a loss :confused. The computer does have windows recovery console on it but iv never used it so im not sure what if anything i could do with it.

Quick note: Right was i was about to post this i noticed yet another error on his computer after initial startup it gives an error that says "Floppy diskette seek failure" i dont know if that has anything to do with everything else but its there nunetheless. He hadnt installed anything in awhile he says and hadnt updated anything either so im really at a loss here. His computer is a dell desktop hes unsure of the model and its not on the computer anywhere but it has windows xp SP2 512mb ram and a pentium D processor any other info thats needed i will post.

Dell desktops are usually Dimensions for home users and Optiplex for business users and the model is in a round circle on the front of the Dimension near the power button.

If you have an XP disk, the same flavor (home or pro) as on your brother's computer, you might try a repair install.

If you want to use the recovery console built into windows, which is not the same thing as a recovery partition put on by Dell, you'll need to wait for directions from one of the MajorGeeks on here.

  3. Give this a shot. Unplug EVERYTHING! Anything that is plugged in. Then unplug the power cord. Press and hole the power button for 30 seconds. Then plug the power cord back in and try to boot it up. The floppy seek error is something you have to change in the bios.

  4. Also , when was the last time it was "cleaned out". The case that is.
