    Hello.
I have had a problem lately where the computer will freeze for about 20 seconds. If I am running winamp at the time the song just stutters while it is going on. After about 20 seconds it stops and everything is normal again. This has been happening on and off for about two weeks. I am running Norton Internet Security and I have ran Spybot and Adaware multiple times during this.

Also, sometimes when shutting down it takes a long time then I get the following message:
The instruction at "0x0040a31e" referenced at "0x00000000" The memory could not be "read"

I am running Windows XP SP 1 ( I have not upgraded to SP 2 yet until I figure this problem out because I don't want to cause any other yet)
    P4 3.0Ghz
    1 Gig of Ram
    ATI AIW 9800 Pro

Is it an Application Error? See if this Navapsvc.exe is mentioned in your error message.

OK, that's one of Norton Internet Security processes files. I have to get off right now, but will get more info on it later or another member can give you the process information for Navapsvc.exe.

The reason why I don't have anything from Norton's is: because every time I have had something of their's installed, I have ended up having to reinstall Windows. I tried again recently thinking that it would be different, but nope. I'll stick with the free stuff that works.

    Adam,

I have to agree with AA, Norton's can cause many problems. I thought they might try and fix some things in the newer versions but it doesn't look like it from what I've seen.

Sorry about this morning, I was running late and didn't have time to go into detail with anything.

navapsvc.exe is part of the Auto-Protect function with Norton Anti-Virus, see here. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...sf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

A couple of things you can try:

    1. Check for any patches or updates from Symantec.

    2. Temporarily disable Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect. To disable Auto-Protect, right-click the NAV Auto-Protect icon in the system tray and click Disable. Reboot your computer and enable the service again, see if it corrects the error.

    3. Reinstall NIS.

Something else to consider. When did this start, did you just install/upgrade to NIS? If so, this could be a file conflicting with something left over from a previous version of Norton's.

I am starting to feel the same way about Norton products now. What other programs would you suggest for Anitvirus and Firewall (I am on a wireless connection).

The problem with Norton started around the time I renewed my subscription for the year to their live update service.

I am going to try uninstalling it to see if that helps now.

Thanks for your help so far.

Be sure and go thru Add/Remove programs in the control panel to uninstall it.

Just my 2 cents, I recommend Avast! A/V found here >>> http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525 <<<. Also either Sygate or ZoneAlarm for firewall, both found there also. I opted for Sygate recently although I am a long time ZA user. Both are good firewalls :) There are also lots of other cool toys in that thread and is a good starting point if you are clean now

    Adam,

What version of Norton Internet Security are you using? I want to send you a link in case you remove NIS and experience problems.

    Norton Internet Security 2003

BUT: I just realized looking at the email confirmation from Norton that I renewed my subscription for Norton Internet Security 2004 by accident. The thing is though, it processed it fine from within Norton Internet Security 2003 and even ran the update without a problem. I am not sure if that will have anything to do with it or not.
