XP freezing on restart

I upgraded an my old HP Pavillion from Me to XP Home edition and everything seems to be working fine, except that when I do a restart, it freezes at the Windows shutting down screen. The only way to proceed at that point is to physically power down the computer. BTW, shutting down the computer through Windows works fine, it's just the Restart option that doesn't work. Has anyone dealt with this?

First of all ME to XP is a no no! Its always best to start with a clean install so that your not bringing any infections/problems along. WinME has a ton of problems and when upgraded they are all upgraded to lol. My opinion, I would backup my data, format and reinstall.

 

Thx for the response, I should have been clearer. That's actually what i did, reformatted my hard disk and installed XP from scratch. That's why I'm suspecting an XP incompatibility with my 4-yr old HP Pavillion that originally came with Me.

Ah! Have you reinstalled any new software since the reinstall?

 

No, it's all the same software...

 

go into device manager and see if there are any ? marks on any devices

 

Just checked Device Manager and no question marks found...

BTW, I'm sorry about the delay in my responses, maybe I'm just not using this site properly but I can't easily tell when a response has been posted.
