    Hi,

Im new to the forums, and have searched for topics relating to my problem. Unfortunatly i have not been able to find anything that has helped.

Anyway, my computer was running fine yesterday (no problems at all!) but as of this morning; whenever i boot my system up, all goes well... up until it reaches the XP title screen with the blue bars moving across. It sorta just hangs, and the blue bars continue to move intermittently; stuttering every so often.

Now i have tried to boot my system in safe mode, but this hangs aswell on Mup.sys

I have also tryed to use the XP cd to repair the installation, and this doesnt work either- it just hangs again! (It also hangs when i select 'enter' instead of 'r').

    Help appriciated

(P.S. Sorry i cant print my dxdiag... as i cant get into my computer lol)

    SPECS are as follows:
    AMD 64 VENICE 3000+
    Radeon X800xt 256mb ddr
    80gb hard drive

So when you try to do a repair install, where does it hang at? Might be more hardware related than software. Have you tried running any diagnostic tests like MHDD to see if your hard drive is crapping out?

By the way, WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS!!!!

Thanks! Yeh it hangs after i press 'r' for repair. At the bottom it says "Examining 76348 at MB disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi...."

Ive never had a problem with my hard drive before, and I have not done anything that could compromise it either. I did notice that after i had left my pc on for about 10hrs while it was downloading, my system became really sluggish so i turned it off for the night. I dont know whether this is related to my problem though.

    Cheers again

    What are your system specs?

    AMD 64 VENICE 3000+
    Radeon X800xt 256mb ddr
    80gb hard drive
    1024mb ram
    gigabite mb kx somthing

Sorry i cant tell you exactly, as my main pc is out of action... as you know.

Ive been searching the net for solutions, most of which include messing around with bios settings and clearing the cmos. Ive done this and feel that i have messed with everything in the bios, and am having no luck at all!

What is odd about this, is that it just 'happend' when i turned my pc on this morning. Id not done anything to it the night before... its so random.

    Thanks

I think padams is right and you have a hardware problem. Sounds like the hard drive is bad. Most hard drive companies offer a drive test/utility program for free. See if you can get that and see if if will boot from the CD and test the drive.

Originally i thought a registry file may be corrupted. This may be the case but the system boots up fine until it gets to the xp loading splash screen, or the mup.sys file in safe mode... which makes me think that it isnt the hard drive...

Have you tried waiting for the safe mode boot to finish. It can take an hour or two.

If it is a mouse problem, try another or look at

    http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/97354.html

If it is an sP2 downlaod problem look at

    http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/31874/?o=20

Use your XP CD to access the repair console. This is the first repair option you come to when booting from the CD.
Enter the number (probably 1) of the xp installation to repair.
Enter the administrator password or return for none

    At the C: prompt typein

    chkdsk /r
    return

Once the checker has finished try to restart the pc, by issuing an exit command, to safe mode or last known good configration.

If you can get the pc to XP title screen, don't try the fixboot or fixmbr command, these will cause more damage.

    Thanks for your help,

No it is not a mouse problem, nor a sp2 issue.

I have tried to get into the recovery console several times; setup wont let me for some reason. It just hangs and says "Examining 76348 at MB disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi...." at the bottom of the screen in a grey box.

Just to rule out some hardware failures, try booting from a bootable CD.

Like the XP cd? That boots...

I dont think i have any other bootable cds? Are there any common ones that i may have?

A CD with the hard drive utilities for your hard drive should do it, or a Linux Live CD would be what I would try. Download Seagate's Seatools, or Maxblast, either should work.

I had a similar problem and like you I tried everything. Eventually I decided I would reformat the drive. This resolved the problem.

If you have all your data on one partition this could be a problem but if you have it on a seperate partition then it is just a pain getting the updated
