XP has bogged down

    Hi all,

My XP Home OS really took a turn for the worst when months ago the SP3 update failed.

After much delay I got an extra HD, did the whole mirror thing, then ran every update, NAV, etc.

Still have a thing where IE (7 or 8) starts up slow, as does the first openning of any email in OE.

I ran HiJack, and while I am far from a novice, finding the headaches are beyond me. Would sincerely appreciate all the help I can get.

    Here is the Hijack log.

    As always, thanks ahead

Re: XP has bogged down (with files 1 of 2)

I found the thread on this board called: Windows XP Cleaning Procedure and have run all the apps on there and am posting the reports in this, and the next thread.

I realize that this post MIGHT belong in the Malware forum, but it is sort of a crossover post. And while I am not anywhere close to a certified software engineer I really don't think that I have any sortof virus or the likes.

    This is soooooo bugging me.

p.s. While running the last tool MGTools, Hijack came up, and had an error. Am posting a picture of the error msg just in case it has some relevance

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problem is not malware. It is the below from your PC specs
You need to at least double your RAM to 1 GB. Yes you could play a variety of games with eliminating various startup processes which will help a little but with the current SP3 update and all the other required security software and other misc programs you need to run, 512MB just does not cut it anymore.

Thank you, first. Don't want to sound ungrateful. I am actually awaiting a 1GB module I ordered a few days ago jsut to be safe.

However I still have a bit of doubt just because this headache never appeared until the SP3 update failed (6 months ago).

But in a few days the RAM should arrive and I actually hope that's all it's about.

    THanks for your input.

According to your logs, you are running SP3. SP3 is more resource hungry than previous versions just like SP2 was more resource hungry than versions before it. Wait for the RAM and see what happens. If it does not help, then you will need to dig deeper but it currently does not look like malware which is why I moved your thread to the Software Forum. Even if the problems are somehow related to SP3, it is still not a malware issue.

Well I am now at 1.5Gb, I made sure that the VM is set to "system set", etc.

And some stuff might be faster, but I have to say that still somethings may not be right?

There might still be some sluggishness, but why the first time I right-click on the desktop (to set properties) do I get the "Device Connect" sound? Makes no sense, you know?

I see someone else posted a link for me to look at, will, but wanted to keep this open.

Thanks to all those who helped out so far.

Well I've pretty much run all the things before. The only thing was DiskLite. I have to say, I always used Windows Defrag app, and wow. What a mistake!

It's analysis kept saying I didn't need it.

DiskLite's analysis however virtually punched me in the face for not defragging sooner.

I'm going to say I see more speed in the computer, but not 100% sure. Some things yes. But two things still bother me:

    1. Still....first time I right-click on the desktop (to set properties) I get the "Device Connect" sound? Weird.
    2. Opening the first email once OE loads takes a while.

Number one really bothers me. What's happening there? Not right.

My last thing is, I would like to find a really good Reg Cleaner. I think my reg file is up to 122mb.

Thanks still to all those who have taken their time to post a reply/thought/idea/link.

    Stick with CCleaner.

Used cCleaner, as well as PCTools. Overall I would say speed has improved.

But the last two items I posted are still there, and still bugging me!!! :confused

Ok, let's forget OE for now. That's secondary, and I'll definitely take your advice and check out Thunder Bird.

But, the "sound" is the file "Windows XP Hardware Insert.wav" which as I looked through the Sound Properties setting is only set to go off on "Device Connect".

Why on Earth would that go off when I right click on the desktop (to get the properties menu)? And why only the first time I do it after a reboot?

Possibly related: The fact that my screensaver doesn't always execute.

I've run every tool people here (and elsewhere) have recommended. Have run complete scans with NAV, SpyBot, etc.

Something's up.... and I'm more concerned rolleyes than angry.
