XP Help Files Gone Bye Bye

Help and Support opens but the files have disappeared ... there is nothing to search for, no index, not topics no nothing.

They were there a while ago and nothing has been deleted, so I suspect a registry problem, but it could be anything.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Try this:

Use your mouse to copy each line individually below. Then click Start, Run and type "cmd" without the quotes, click OK. A Command Prompt window will open. Right click in this Window and select Paste. Then press Enter.


assoc.hlp=hlpfile

assoc.chm=chm.file


You can also type the above lines in Command Prompt should you not wish to copy and paste. Enter one line, press "Enter" then enter the other line and press "Enter".

Thanks for the tip but its a no go ... this happened simultaneously with some of my programs (like Snagit, Soundforge and a few others) suddenly deciding to run in restricted user mode ... I can't halp feeling the two issues are related and that if I could find a solution to one the other would take care of itself, but so far no luck at all with either.

 

Are there any files in C:\Windows\Help?

 

about 42 megs of .hlp and .chm files.

 

Try this:

Start>>Run

In Run type "regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\hhctrl.ocx." without the quotes and click OK.

 

got a message that it succeeded in entering the data in the registry, but the files still don't open from the help screen.

Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that all the help viewer
components are properly installed and registered. (freeware)
