hi, i have posted about this before with no luck, but thought i'try again.

For reasons I wont go into, I copied the windows folder that holds the drivers, then stupidly put the copy back to replace the original. since then all has gine tits up, windows never starts properly, when it finally gets going, its very slow and has problems contacting devices or networks, but only then and again...

First question, is there so,e funky tools that will tell me whats wrong with the windows file structure? (norton system works has already said the registry is fine), if not, if I reinstall windows without a format, will everything else still keep working afterwards? oh, and I have SP2, but would not be able to reinstall it at the moment if I did reinstall XP, would that matter??

    thanks

    hi, cheers for replying,
as the computer starts, i get the good old VAIO screen, then it goes black for while and i get a message saying that windows has not started successfully, it could be cos of a hardware or software change etc etc.
i get the options that you'd get if you F8'd during the boot up. the previous config option doesn't do any good, neither does the safe mode.

Windows does then start up but very very slowly. once i log on, i get the desktop almost instantly but the egg timer stays present on the windows bar for ages. even when I can get to my start button, it takes another age to find the hard drive or files on the HD.

Once its all up and running, its ok, everything works fine. I have done a million system checks with Norton system owrks but with no luck.

Like I said, the only thing I can think of that might have had an influence on this situation was me copying the drivers directory from the windows root. but i didnt change anything....?

When i go to shut the machine down, this to takes ages. the only other thing is that I can not hook it up to a network i use all the time...

any ideas? can I just reinstal windows and not loose my files? What about some funky windows diagnostic tool? they must have something out there on the market....

    thanks for any help dude

Have you been checked for virus/spyware infections?

About the reinstalling windows, yes you can do a reinstall without losing any data. Simply boot from your CD-ROM and choose to do a R reinstallation.

(Note: Choose the second R not the first, because this will take you into the Recovery Console.)

If you do NOT have a disk, let me know and we will attempt to fix this issue.
