man, i love this OS over win ME but i am finding things that don't work so well or at all. i did a hd change and installed XP fresh last weekend. yesterday, i found out,no sound. today, i find out( through the missus) that the personal stuff she had on wordpad will not open in XP. it makes me wonder what else will not jive. that's why i joined this thang in the first place. i need a good knowledgable XP genius. any body up for this? holla back.

Well...the reason the her files won't open...I'm guessing that your Win ME is in FAT file format and the new install of XP is in NTFS file format.

As far as the sound is concerned...have you looked in the device manager to see if there are conflicts or if there is even a driver installed, and if so, is it the latest, if not go to their website and download and install the latest driver!! Uninstall the old one first, ofcourse!!

You'vehad multiple problems with ME ....most unresolved ....now problems with XP ....are we sure it's not all hardware related?

What does the system report as ram ...and have you tested it?
Did you add the new hard drive and slave the old one (if so, are you poss. it was virus free?)

o.k i kinda figured that, so the question is, how to convert these files from fat to ntfs. very important unless i want to wait on some money to hook up my old hd. the driver is built in to my trigem cognac( i know, old) mobo crystal audio cs4299. i dl'd the driver and installed it but no good, still got muddy sound. the system sounds are ok, but music and audio are crap. the old hd is completely out and i got 384MB RAM TW. granted i probably need more ram...but ...everything else is so smooth....tell me how to test it.

NTFS will read fat ...one of my puters runs 256 and runs fine.

Other question ...when you try to open the wordpad file (in Word?) are you choosing the drop down menu as to type of file?

i am basically right clicking the file on the disk in my cd drive and clicking open .when i do , it says it cannot load word for windows 6.0 files, then click ok. i can pull up a blank wordpad page.

thanks tim the word viewer works fine. future docs made by the wife will probably be on the xp wordpad and she'll be back on track. thanks again as she uses the pc to bible study extensively. you got ideas about the sound? i have a list of sound drivers that are supposed to be included in xp and mine was 1 on them , so at this point , i may have 2 of the same audio drivers installed. don't know if that hurts but i know it don't work either.

No problem ....you said system sounds are OK, but audio is crap ...do you mean from cd's? Or sound from web pages ..or both?
