I recently purchased an ASUS K8V SE motherboard, Athlon 3000 CPU, Lite-On DVD burner, Maxtor 80GB HD, 512Mb DDR 400 RAM and a GE Force 9550 video card. The installation of XP Pro was going flawless until the end where it resets. When doing so it got to a point and reset itsef again. Now everytime I start the machine it goes to a selection of safe mode, normal mode etc... irreguardless of what I select it shows the XP splash screen, the HD makes a click sound, the blue screen of death appears (briefly) and then resets again.

I have returned the motherboard and CPU to the supplier and they have tested it ok. I have swapped the RAM, HD, power supply, video card and even the DVD player and still no differance, I even downloaded the newest BIOS and flashed it in. Memtest86 does not show any memory failures.

The XP Pro software has been installed severla times and the BIOS settings have been varied and set to default ...still the PC resets upon power-up. I cannot think of anything else to try, does this problem sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance!

That's pretty odd on a new computer. The fact that you sent in the motherboard and it passed is also a little confusing.

I have once had an experience with a board that if the second USB ports were connected it would short out the second IDE controller. It was a known problem with the board though and the only solution was to short the USB ports in order to stop the computer from crashing.

So maybe it's a defect with the board itself. One which only shows if certain ports are being used at the same time. It's really all I can think of right now.

It sounds as if you've pretty much ruled out hardware problems...

So, when you reinstalled the OS, did you format first? Make sure to format, and do not do the quick format, do the full format.

That is the only thing I can think of. Unless... I once had an XP disc that was faulty, and it installed and got to the reset point. Not very likely, but it is worth trying I guess.

Interesting... I am going thru the same problem myself right now.
First thing I'd ask is... what is the error code when u get dumped?
Try turning off the automatic reboot if u cant see it... that way u can ck the error code.
There is a known conflict between the o/s and the "lexmar"??? driver.. that will send u to reboot.
I have done a FULL format, checked my RAM, reinstalled o/s, and I still have it.. so it has to be a hardware problem or driver issue with xp pro... since i got dumped with nothing but the o/s onboard. Will update if I figure this out...good luck.

I'd like to be able to freeze the screen but since it wont boot I cannot change the setting to do so. Anyways, I tried loading Win 2000 and got an error STOP: 0x00000051 (parameter, parameter, parameter, parameter) REGISTRY_ERROR ...help!

I finally figured it out! Used the ultimatebootcd to test the hard drive with 3 differant tests, all showed the hard drive was ok. Tested the memory with Memtest86+ and my RAM failed test#5 (memory page move). The next step I did was to write 0's to all hard drive locations to erase any possibility of corrupt data, I then re-installed Win XP. During the XP install's reboot process the computer reset on me again so I pulled the RAM out of DIMM slot#1 and placed into DIMM slot#2 and booted the machine up. Now the computed booted past the slash screen and the XP install was able to be completed.

So there is either a DIMM slot#1 failure on my MB or the Samsung RAMs timing is slightly off. I will replace another good stick of RAM into DIMM slot one to verify the slots integrity. Does anyone have the recommended memory settings for a ASUS K8V SE MB running AMI 1009 BIOS?

Anyways, it appears anytime you have Athlon64 installation reset problems it usually points to the RAM!!! beware!!!
