Have a home built Asus MB PC running XP, that started to reboot all on its own when running. It was somewhat infrequent, and I thought it must have been a loose connection or something. Now it only does a partial reboot when you try to start it. BIOS runs fine, and XP starts to load, while displaying the basic low res Windows logo. However, when it tries to switch to the high res screen and complete booting, it dies and reboots again. The only way to get it running is to start it in safe mode.

Could this be a virus? If so what would it be, and what is the best way to correct it

Is it possible.... yes. But it is more likely to do with hardware/driver issues.

If you want to truly rule out malware, run thru the below and attach the logs requested.
