    Hi Folks,

For the second time in about 10 days I have had to re-activate Windows XP because it says I have made a major change to the system. I have not changed anything (hardware or software). Is this a sign of something bad happening (OS getting corrupted, HD going bad or Trojan or Virus)? No other apparent problems. Or should I just re-activate and not worry?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Bob Schoner

Could be a flaky driver, or registry corruption.

Check something for me? Go to msconfig (start, run, msconfig) and click on the services tab. Put a check in hide all ms services, and then post here what the names are of the remaning services.

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back. Here are the services running:
    avast! iAVS4 Control Service
    avast! Anti Virus
    avast! Mail Scanner
    avast! Web Scanner

    INCD Helper Ahead Software
Sound Max Agent Analog Devices Inc
    Win Fax Pro Symantec Corp
    WZCBDL Service Unknown

The WZCBDL seems to ring a bell with me, but I really don't recognize. With the exception of Sound Max Agent I recognize the others. Sound Max Agent could be my sound card (built into the MotherBoard).

    Thanks,

    Bob Schoner

    Thats for Dlink software.

    Does it happen every boot?

    Hi Again,
I "Googled" for WZCBDL and it looks like it belongs to my D-Link wireless router.

    Thanks Again

    Hi Again again,

Sorry my response crossed yours in cyberspace.

No, it does not happen every boot. Seems like it's been about 10 days between the first event and then again today.

Well, you could use msconfig to disable all your startup items and try it out for a bit. If it works ok, then try to narrow down which item it is.

OK. But since it seems to happen randomly with a long time in between I'd be a long time identifying if it's a start up item causing the problem. I think I'll see if it repeats again and if the frequency gets quicker. It could also be a hardware problem like a HD starting to go but it seems funny that it hit the same place twice.

Thanks again for getting back. This a nice forum and a valuable website.

    Something else.

Check your event logs for errors as well, specifically, the system log.
