I have recently installed a copy of XP and it is now telling me to register the product, however it is already registered. Does anyone know a work around to bypass this?

    Re-activate it.

There is no reason not to.

    How do I re-activate it?

When it asks you to, choose yes :)

It doesn't ask me, it says according to its records it is already registered and asks me to contact their technical support. However the original registration must remain legal, whilst my installation does not specifically need to be so....are there any registry entries for instance that I can modify to overcome my difficulty?

    No.

Can you specifically post what it says?

Registration is optional with XP, activation is not.

That is not any message I've seen before.

In regards to your installation not needing to remain legal--it does, if you want help from here :)

    Are you seeing something like--

You boot up, it says it must be activated with Microsoft before continuing --> then you click ok and it says already activated?

If yes, does it then let you into the desktop?
