XP license

i have an HP and i only have an XP license but not an actual XP disc. could i install XP from a disc that a friend of mine has, legally???

If you have a valid license, you have the right to use the software. You can't use an OEM license (most OS preinstalled by the manufacturers are issued with OEM licenses)for a retail installation disk nor can you use an XP Home license for an XP Pro installation disk, and vice versa. Microsoft sells the license to use it's software, it does not actually sell the software itself to you. Read the EULA and you'll see this.

 

Don't you have some sort of recovery disc that contains the OS itself?

 

You can not use a friends disk and then use your license though.

 

You can use any disk as long as it meets the requirements of the license. I use an OEM disk I bought for my second computer and used it to format and reinstall the OS on my Compaq because I didn't want all the extra crap that was on the compaq rescue disk. Microsoft's concern is the license (and the money you paid for it), not the disc you use. How do you think slipstream disks work?

 

i would, as long as you have a valid key, i wouldn't worry about it, m$ will never know.

 

Okay, I stand corrected, but that's only if that authorization is not being used on any other computer...................
