New motherboard/cpu installed. Per recommendations by this group I have tried to install XP Pro from the cd drive. I set up the bios to load from the cd drive first. During POST I can use either my wireless keyboard or the cheap USB motherboard. After computer starts to load the question comes up do I want a new XP install, a repair or exit? By this time a few minutes have gone by and now my keyboard no longer functions as if the drivers have been deleted and I cannot make my choice.
XPPro is on my harddrive along with all my info I wish to save. I obviously know enough to get into trouble but not enough to get back out of it. Thanks for any help anyone provides.

Thank you for the reply and link. My problem is that when I get to screen 4 and have to hit the enter key to proceed or choose another option my keyboard does not work anymore. Either of the ones I have tried are just dead as if they were unplugged.

Any ideas for te keyboard issue? I bought an inexpensive, USB keyboard instead of my wireless one and neither of them function when I get to screen 4.

    USB was enabled.

    Any other thoughts appreciated.

Have you tried that keyboard on another system and ensured that it actually works?

Have you tried the other type of keyboard (that plugs in at the back but is not USB).

Yeah, you should have bought an inexpensive[cheapest you can get--like $5] PS/2 keyboard (round plug that connects in the back). USB keyboards aren't always recognized by BIOS or before Windows is fully installed. Your Bios recognizes the keyboard but the Windows installation temporary OS doesn't.

Keyboard issue aside, what are you trying to do? You have XP installed and want to save data but you are going to install XP again? Where are you going to put the new install to make sure you don't lose the data you want to save?

    That's the sort I meant PS/2.

If he follows the link I posted all previous DATA and settings remain but you have a nice new "squeaky clean" XP OS but it needs all patches etc. I have personally used it on 5-6 occasions and swear by it.

Thanks to all. I will go see if I can find someone who sells the round plug type keyboard.

I upgraded my motherboard and cpu and all I am trying to do is get the computer to work again. I did not know that for some reason XP would not load from the hard drive or that it would be so difficult and frustrating to get it working again.

Wow. That was a PITA! But now it is done. Thanks to all who helped, especially Bold Eagle with his pointer to Fred Langas letter. That saved me lots of time and I did not much info besides a couple of drivers I think. The final problem was solved by using an old style keyboard/mouse with the round plugs. This was a must.

Congratz and glad you got it sorted. Make sure you do all system updates.
