    Hi guys,
    does anyone know how I can tell win xp that I've read an email it says I haven't? Is there a temporary file or something I can kill? My logon screen says I have an unread email, when I haven't, and it's doing my head in!

    From memory I think there should be an option to turn off email notification in User Accounts in Control Panel.

    If not, you can try modifying the Registry, after doing a backup and creating a Restore Point.

    Start, Run and type in regedit

    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

    On the right-hand side should be MessageExpiryDays

    Right-click it, and select modify.

    0 = disabled 3 = Default

    Reboot and that should do it.

    Beautiful, thanks :)
    Used regseeker (searched for "unread")to ferret it out (being lazy). There was a entry called message count with the value 1, which I set to zero.

    This isn't really helpful to you -but I've experienced the same problem -I wonder how common a probem it is?
    (The reg edit worked for me too).

    It's not really a problem, but by design.

    Windows XP and XP Pro PC's that are not members of a domain will display a hyperlink with unread emails.

    Only two programs support this feature, Outlook Express and Windows Messenger. (Not MSN Messenger)

    The unbelievable part is that Micro$$oft didn't include an easy way to turn it off or on in User Accounts. I guess that shouldn't surprise me.

    Anyway, I'm glad it's sorted for you both.
