    Hi,

I'm well past pulling my hair out over a desktop system and now its just funny, intriguing and yet a little tedious as it continues to chuck me curveballs.

I am running a dual boot of XP sp3 (one was meant as a form of backup and was hardly used but is now upto date). I'll spare you the list of problems which began over a week ago with a possible Trojan Crypt and Delf infection, as that state has been rolled back via Acronis to about a month ago prior to
installing SP3. I was almost ready to post the logs of that state when all hell broke loose.

Both installs are now as upto date as they can be, bar mobo and chipset drivers which I dare not mess with at this time as the system is so unstable now.

A partition of acronis images including a master one (which I temporarily went back to that threw a wobbly, has corrupted, so I was left with just the 'pre SP3' image to go from, as the sole working one left).

Anyway my system had run 24/7 no problems (if a little uncared for) for ages no matter what I chucked at it, though I had had a few BSOD reboots infrequently. Now they are almost constant in both installs and Windows Error Reporting is consistent in its error message and suggested cause 'That it is a BSOD caused by a device or driver'.

Games were fine before the infection, now they set off thermal protection in the gfx card, taking it above 100C after a few minutes.

Yesterday I totally cleaned out the system and re-sat all connections and it sounds much better for it. However the rebooting and overheating continue.

During the Windows updates at various points it crashed during them, or after install and would state that 'the C:/ is corrupted or unreadable please run CHKDSK' or L:/$mft is corrupted / unreadable run CHKDSk'. On reboot CHKDSK would fix a few files and a few reboots later it would be ok, well when I say ok I mean back to only rebooting randomly when its most important it doesn't. Therefore it seems too risky to use any image programs, or attempt a fresh install of Windows as it appears hardware related and will die a death during such attempts, leaving me more broken than I currently am.

I think its GFX card related but I decided to also check the ram. 30 passes with the Windows memory tester have found no errors there.

Anyway here is the consistent error message :

    Error Signature:
    BCCode : 24 BCP1 : 001902FE BCP2 : B6E4ED40 BCP3 : B6E4EA3C
    BCP4 : 8055F159 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 768_1

Technical details or pieces included in the report to microsoft:

In addition from this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=167785 I have followed the instructions of 'Kniht' to attach the minidump folders latest files and eventviewer results incase they are of use.

If someone could please check this over to help determine the device in question I would appreciate it. I am hoping to get the system stable enough to diagnose if any malware is present aswell, or stable enough to start fresh if thats a better option.

    Any advice appreciated.

Firstly my apologies to self bump this thread but I kinda got somewhere with it and then its gone and chucked a final curveball that may be found amusing but which equally poses a new question.:confused

A prior intel system from Novatech (not to bad mouth them as I bought on others experiences) had given me pure hell under Windows ME (which unlike real M.E that my wife suffers from is a total joke) this desktop Athlon system, as a self build, has been near flawless for many years. Infact thanks to acronis products I don't think I've ever had to do a reinstall of XP, whereas I had to reformat n reinstall ME practically every week.

Anyway, with the current desktop that was in rebooting hell, thanks to a few threads here, I got some decent BSOD messages (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR EQUAL etc) from which all pointed to a driver issue, or 3rd party app as the problem, rather than a hardware issue as I had suspected.

I ran verifier.exe which managed a small 3rd party list but couldn't be exact. MSCONFIG helped but it seemed it wasn't due to any 3rd party app, service, or driver, so I figured it was XP corruption based and felt safe to re-install if it wasn't hardware.

I stripped the system to just GFX, DVD, and 1 HDD which I prepped with Acronis tools to save formatting time.

    Then......

my LG 4163b DVD drive decided to eat my prior Windows ME disc (I should've used my newer Pioneer even though the LG has given sterling service) which is required to validate the fresh XP home edition re-install.

    Oh how I laughed.rolleyes

So with all prior Acronis images corrupted by whatever this problem was & with ok hardware afterall, I sit king of the mountain of pertinent data, with two genuine Windows discs in my hand, cracking up like my copy of ME, without which I cannot reclaim my hill :banghead

So I ask simply, is there anyway around the validation of a previous windows version when installing an upgrade copy of Win XP Home edition? Does MS offer any such service via telephone etc?

I have two purchased discs with valid keys, one now cracked by bSOD and his laws and no legal method of getting back into a fresh windows install, as much as the getting it somewhere useful phase, fills me with dread.

I can happily produce proof of valid windows copies and ones destruction and the valid keys. However everyone I know nowadays doesn't own anything more than an OEM recovery disc version of windows so I know not where to turn. Fake credit crunch included I am bloody skint and I think tracking a copy of WIN ME or similar maybe a time (I don't have) consuming experience.

I also don't fancy Vista for my desktop, as my laptop simply hung in firefox for a first time, for it to reboot totally wiped and in need of True Image and Disk Director for me to feel remotely confident with it again. I call that truly flaky as an OS, as if that was my current desktop I'd be missing 2TB of data at the least.

    Namaste:banghead
