XP Not Autodetecting USB Keyboard

Hey folks,

I'm running XP Media Center, and I have a Saitek Eclipse II USB keyboard. I unplugged the keyboard while Windows was in standby mode just a few minutes ago, and now it's not autodetecting the keyboard. I've rebooted, to no avail.

I have two user accounts on the box, an admin and a non-admin. I can get into the non-admin fine, but I can't force a Check For New Hardware. I can't get into the admin box because I can't enter a pwd. I can't boot into safe mode since the mobo doesn't even seem to be detecting the keyboard. It is still detecting my USB wireless mouse.

It's not autodetecting on my XP Pro laptop either, even with a forced hardware scan.

I can't imagine that I've fried the keyboard, since I was using 1/3 of a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol in a gun-cleaning wad, lightly rubbing each of the keys...and the thing was disconnected. What on earth am I doing wrong?

Nevermind, figured it out.

 

So this is the second one of these keyboards I've owned. It has a very distinctive USB cable, and I had to cannibalize the old one for parts for anothe project. So, somehow, the old USB cable was still in my cable organizer.
I was unplugging/replugging the disembodied cable, while the identical one had slipped down inside the sheath.
