    Need help again !!

    SYS Specs

    AMD 1.4G
    1G DDR
    Win XP Home
    120G HDD
    ATI Graphics card
    BAsic CDR
    All other cards pulled..

I am performing a clean load on a this machine which previously had XP Pro. Reformatted HDD in NTFS into 2 partions (6G C: and 110G D:)

XP Is not recognizing my modem. When it boots wizards claims it has found "PCI Simple Comm Controllor" but after auto searching it cannot find the SW to install. I try and point it to the Win/Sys32/Drivers folder and it still won't install. I have tried the lovely XP Modem troubleshooter to no avail.

Under device manager I do not have a modem, just a big yellow ? mark by this PCI Simple Comm Controller. I have tried adding a generic 56K modem driver with no luck. I have also tried all five slots with the modem with no luck. However, this modem works fine in another machine I have.

I have tried reloading XP again with no luck. Same scenario. I am tempted to copy all of the drivers from the other XP home machine that I have but am afraid this will hose it up further..

Any advice is always greatly appreciated..

Do you have any idea what modem it is?

and is the other machine running XP? ( whats needed is the modem name and version so a driver can be found..XP has loads of drivers BUT doesnt have everyone unfortunatly... so its then off seaching for drivers for that modem )

if so what you need is to install the XP drivers or if its an old modem generally the win2k ones work so..so...

The modem is a generic PCtel platinum V.90 that came with the machine.. This modem worked in this machine with the previous version of XP installed, however the machine was so messed up a new load of XP was needed leading to where I am at now..

Basically I have tried three working modems in this machine and XP )in this machine) won't recognize any of them. It just tries to load this "simple PCI comm controller" and comes back to say "sw not found on this machine for this device" of which I have never heard of..

Could this be a BIOS/CMOS setting that I am missing.. I have tried both PNP and NON-PNP OS settings to no avail..

Ironically, I have had this same problem in another P2.6G AMD system I recently built with loading XP Pro.

If it helps I loaded two machines with the same XP Home disc (2 diff prod codes).. One machine works perfect with the modem and the other doesn't. I am totally lost.. Do I try and copy drivers from the working machine or is there a deaper issue ??

Its possible you have a bad install of XP on that machine, especially as you have tried 3 different ones in it?

From a small bit of reading I have done it looks like PcTel dont supply drivers for those modems anymore and you have to goto Conexant http://www.pctel.com/support.php

    Try the info here
    http://conexant.com/support/md_winxpinfo.html#q1

If not re-install XP but without the modem in BUT have PNP set in Bios and YES before re-install try the drivers from the other machine.
