This might just be a communication problem but I have a friend's hard drive from a notebook that was running Win2000 and I am trying to use an external enclosure/adapter to pull some pictures from it. The PC running XP doesn't recognize the drive, I hear the tones and see the pop-ups that it sees it but then the message pops up that it won't work properly and it doesn't recognize it. I hook it up to my Vista laptop and it sees the drive just fine but it doesn't see any files on it. The laptop it came out of only has one USB port and it is toast, destroyed somehow. Any help to get this drive recognized is greatly appreciated!

How does the external enclosure connect to the computer? Have you installed any drivers that may be necessary?

The drive enclosure connects by USB, I have looked and requested drivers but there apparently aren't any? I tried the mfr website and came up blank.

The enclosure is brand new from Newegg. And it seems to work with the Vista laptop. I used another laptop hard drive with XP files on it and it worked fine so I didn't think it was the enclosure. The drive works in the laptop it came in but I don't have the right adapter yet to connect it to another laptop I have without a hard drive. Thanks for the replies.

Don't install a hd from one laptop as the only hd in a different laptop. I'm not sure if that's what you are thinking of doing but that's what I got from the quote.

It doesn't sound like it is really working if it sees the hd but doesn't see any files on it.

thanks everyone for checking out this thread. The whole problem was an incorrect jumper setting. Feeling a bit stupid that I didn't figure it out sooner.

At least you sorted it out and are now able to see the files you need to grab. Thanks for letting us know it is now working.
