xp pro boots only with cd?

hi, a friend of mine has fresh install of xp pro and is getting "Boot Disk Error: Insert System Disk and Press Enter to continue" when booting up. if you put xp cd in and press enter it boots fine? any ideas please

 

Take the floppy out of the drive.

 

theres no floppy in there m8 cause there is no floppy drive. . boots with xp CD only . wont boot straight from hard drive.

 

make sure the BIOS boot order is set to HDD0 first?

 

it is m8. is it worth pulling battery from mb and resetting bios defaults? muct mention i formated a xp home, to replace with xp pro. cant think this would cause this but u never know. xp home had a boot problem saying missing file. do you think hard drive is damaged. she admits to turning off at the wall twice before problem started.. cheers

 

Copy ntldr, and ntdetect.com to the root of the hard drive.
Run a fixmbr.
Then run a fixboot.

This is all done from Recovery Console.

 

Would i be correct in thinking that BIOS cant find MBR
ie: it is in diffrent chs and auto run takes over when cd is inserted

 

tried running fixboot. will follow your instructions in that order. know how to copy files in recovery console, but how will i know files went to root of the disk,or will they just be put there by copying them to disk.ps what exactly is the root of the disk,is it a hidden part not in either partition? thanks very much for your help.
