I just bought a new Dell with XP Pro and they no longer provide a OS CD saying that you don't need it. What happens down the road when my hard drive goes out and I want to replace it myself with the original XP OS that I paid for?

They usually pre-install a backup program so that you can make a dvd bootable image of the system ....and yes, I would b*tch.

Thanks, TimW. And yes, I'm going to see if they'll provide me with a CD.

Normally there should be a serial on a sticker on your PC (usually on the back).

EDIT: Downloading XP is illegal... any more suggestions to do this and you won't last long!

Most recent Dells I've ordered-- in the last month or two-- had an option to include the OS CD for an extra $10.

Dell computers are nice, but the company is getting very cheap, espically if there charging an extra ten dollars to include a windows cd!

When I look back at what I've spent on computer stuff over the years, an extra $10 on a $450 Dell PC that includes 512MB RAM, a 160GB SATA HD and a 17" LCD shipped free doesn't seem like that big a deal. I once spent $500 on a 3X CD-RW, and $300 on a 213MB hard drive. Be happy you live in technology-saturated consumer electronic times.:)

If you go to start/ programs look for dell, there will be an option to burn your whole system restore cd or dvd, in my opinion this is better than the windows cd, because all the correct drivers will be supplied on that disc.

Yes, I'll keep you posted but it will be a week or so as Dell is replacing my hard drive (noisy) and it will be that long before it's here as it will have all the original programs on it.
