    Hi all;
Recently I acquired a Dell Inspiron laptop running XP Pro. The operating system is there but no drivers. I was able to find and install the ethernet driver, but not the audio, PCI or video ones.
I am unable to identify the Brand name or number of these devices and have tried Everest Home Edition which identified the devices as SIS brand and gave the numbers, but apparently wrongly, because when I downloaded the named drivers and tried to install them, they were rejected.
Has anyone any thoughts on my next action should be?
    Any/all help is greatly appreciated,
    Jim

as posted above, pop over to DELL and enter your model version into the search boxes to list your drivers.

    http://support.dell.com/

you can either use the service tag alphanumeric label text or easier option is to use the drop down menus to pick your Laptops product model and version, choose Drivers & Downloads under the select a tool menu and click GO.

    Thanks for the Dell suggestion!

That solved most of the problem(s). See attached pic's

But, I still have an issue with a PCI device (see attached pic's). I am unable to identify the device that has the problem. The ethernet adapater, audio, video, USB ports, and CD drive all seem to be functioning fine.

I think it may be the modem but I'm not sure and have no way (that I can think of) to check it. Everest thinks there's a SIS SW modem, but Dell does not list a driver for it, so I'm not sure that is what it is.

    All assistance is appreciated,

    Jim

ok to check to see if u have a modem, take a look at the back of ur comp or open the up case.

for the drivers type in google 'sis sw modem drivers' and see what u get....

Which model Dell is it Jim, model and version number?

Stranger things have happened going this route but it sometimes works, double click the ? marked driver or right click > properties > driver > update driver > check "yes this time only" > next > next > and windows will search its driver dbase for any matching drivers.

    Thank you for the reply!

Dell laptop inspiron 1000, win xp pro, service tag 3kpq151.

I've tried clicking on the ?, get: "other device", "unknown" manufactuer. location: PCI Bus 0, divice 2, function 6. which points to: sis sw modem.

When I click on "re-install driver" it can't find it and I have no disc with it on.

Should I try going to sis.com and downloading that driver?

    Jim

Don't rely on Everest for modem detection.

Modems can't be detected accurately with programs like Everest.

Anyway, Dell list the modem as an "Agere Systems AC97 Modem" under Communication Drivers HERE.

Have you tried installing that driver?

And have you tried uninstalling the ? unknown device from Device Manager and letting Windows sort it out?
