All of a sudden my OS (Win XP Pro, SP II) froze shortly after bootup.

I was able get on Firefox but the mouse froze on the XP screen when running any HD application...

Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't free up the mouse, and doing it twice got no response.

Earlier, I couldn't find any conflicts on the Device Manager.

I changed my mouse connection from USB to Serial, but that made no difference...

Now, Windows booted up OK, but the screen froze right after a few tray &
desktop icons had loaded. Ctrl-Alt-Delete still didn't function for a shutdown...

I am able to get into safe-mode OK...

Strangely, the Num-Lock light and the mouse underside red beam stayed on after shutdown...

I have 3 Gig of RAM, so I doubt memory is an issue (??).

    Greetings, ColKorn.

We need more info - download and install Everest, a free system information tool.

Run Everest and click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next - Choose System Summary Only > Next - Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate.
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop, use Browse to locate desktop).

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

Also, open your Event Viewer, see if anything correlates with the crashes.

The good Safe Mode boot indicates some 3rd-party program may be causing problems - take a look at your startup list, temp. disable anything unnecessary.

You might also get into your BIOS, check any temperatures.

The Numlock and mouse may be symptoms of motherboard or power supply failure - I'd check the board for obvious signs (burn marks, bulging or leaky capacitors, etc.), and check all connections.

Can I install and run Everest on my PC, when it functions only in safe mode?

I can certainly download it on this old laptop, which I'm using as a temp. substitute...

Yes, the program should install while in Safe Mode.

Have you added any new hardware recently or changed anything hardware-wise around? You might want to try running scan disk on the drive.

No new hardware additions lately, just some swapping around some USB devices....

    Will run Scandisk shortly...

Ran Chkdsk, which came back with this result:

"Chkdsk discovered free space marked as allocated in the MFT bitmap [ditto in the volume bitmap]. Windows found problems with the file system.":(

My next step would be to perform a repair installation of XP, try to rule out any Windows problems.

Right, though I lost my password and need to run Orphcrack to see if I can retrieve it...tonight.
