Well, did a fresh install of XP Pro on a Dell today, and from the get go Windows Update would not work. FYI, this is an SP2 disc, and SP3 was downloaded and installed as a standalone. Never had a problem with this method before.

Ran the gamut with 0x8024D001. Got all the netFramework installed, tired MSFixit to no avail, nothing would get it to work.

A little more research, and I found a Windows Update Agent standalone installer, and HALLELUJAH, it worked! Well, almost. My hopes were dashed when it then proceeded to not download, or install one damn update.

The only thing I have managed to do is change the hour of day Windows will automatically install updates. It actually managed to install 146, but can't do jack manually an hasn't done an automatic since the initial one.

So, ran the FixIt tool again, and it was kind enough to inform me that it failed to fix the problems it allegedly encountered (even though it's an "Update" fixit):

Service registration is missing or corrupt
    Windows update error 0x800B0100(2013-10-05-T-11_53_05P)
    Problems installing recent updates
Cryptographic service components are not registered

SO, ran another FixIt to work over the cryptographic components, didn't work. Ran the FixIt for the Windows Update error, still doesn't :*** download, or install updates.

Anyone else out there having this kind of fun? I'm ready to install XP Home Edition on it for :crap and giggles just to see if the same joy ride is involved.

    Temporarily turn Off Automatic Updates.

Look for any "auto update" installers saved on the HD.
I think they are in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads\
For any that you find there, make backup copies and then Delete them.

Then go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us and try again.

Download the FixIt and run it in Safe Mode, then reboot and try MS update again.

As I recall, when you run that utility, you will loose the update history, but not the updates.

I used the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.2
You will have to scroll down to see MBSASetup-x86-EN.msi which is the 32-bit version. 64-bit versions are at the top.

Make sure the server service is running - it's required.

Once everything was updated, MS Update was working again.
