    Here's my list of problems;
First off though IE 8, Comcast cable.

    1. No IE tool bar.
    2. Go to Control Panel>Internet Options, double click or right click, I get a fast flash but no "Open".
    3. Try to download from internet same thing..fast flash but no download.
    4. Also in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components>Windows Componets Wizard...Intenet Explorer box is checked with 0.0 MB showing.
    5. In "Set Programs Access and Defaults under "Microsoft Windows">Web Browser it shows Internet Explorer. Under "Custom", "Chooose a Web Browser" it shows "Use my current Web browser" selected. When I change it to IE it will not enable and the "enable access" box is checked but "greys out".
    6. In taskbar the "window" only has the IE icon, (blue colored "e" with yellow planetary ring around it), but no description. i.e. "Major Geeks".
    7. Can't copy and paste.
    8. In Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, "Internet Explorer 8" is on the list with the size showing as 4.39 MB.

I know this is wordy but I hope enough information is here for assistance.

    Thanks,

Hello, did you recently download IE8? What IE version did you have before? Try to remove IE8 via add & remove programs and reboot, and you should revert back to the IE version you had before IE8.

Thanks for responding. Went all day yesterday without access to Internet so I couldn't get back. Poked around in files and found SP 3 and reinstalled that and this morning I could get back on to reply. Do not know what or if an older version of IE is on this machine. I borrowed this one until I replace motherboard on my real one. This one is a Dell Optiplex GX 150. All other problems exist as earlier post describes. Can't download off the "net" so removing IE 8 at this point would not be helpful not knowing what's behind IE8 if anything. I am attempting with this post to include a HJT log. Thanks for your help, hope attachment works. Well attachment won't work so I'll let this message fly on for more advice.

One question before I attempt to remove IE 8 from Add/Remove programs. I tried through Search>Files and Folders>C: to find IE 7 and nothing shows up in Search. Does this mean nothing is there? Also in addition to not being able to open up "Internet Options" I cannot open up "Sounds and Audio Devices". And what will happen if I remove IE 8, it doesn't revert to 7, and then I can't get back on the Internet? As I sit here now I cannot download anything from the "net". Thanks, sorry for the pain!

Again, I've tried Firefox but I can't download from the net. Just a note.

    Thanks,

I agree with clarity. No, I can surf the net to any web page but when I try to download anything I can't. I believe I am using some type of IE 8 that has been corrupted. If I go to Firefox web site and try to download nothing. If I go to MS website to download IE 8 or IE 7 nothing. Tried to download McAfee removal tool, (their link), nothing. If there is some kind of tool to evaluate or repair my XP Pro I know I can't download it as I sit now.
    Thanks again,

Also to flavelee: I can't copy and paste to these posts. I copy the HJT logs from Notepad but when I go to paste nothing happens. No "Paste" box at all.

I would check to see if your AV is working as it should ... it could quite possibly be Malware ... other than that ... as I say to just about everyone else ... it never hurts to pop in your Windows CD/DVD, open up CMD and type sfc /SCANNOW and then after thats complete type chkdsk /r c:

Also if you haven't got access to another computer with the Internet, most computer magazines (some well known ones where I am include PC User and APC), have the most up to date Browsers on them ... however read the contents of the CD/DVD before buying to ensure it does have it.

That isn't what I meant ... do you have you Original Microsoft Windows CD/DVD?

I read the thread ... you said this
    And I said this
So I'm sure you can see where MY confusion came into play ...
