Xp Pro product key

I have a customers computer and they need a fresh xp pro install, but they're unsure of where their product key is. Is there any way of retrieving this off the computer?

The machine came with xp home and they upgraded to pro as they needed to have it networked in their business. This was all done before my time working for us. I will try that link though.

 

Thanks for the link, I was able to retrieve the product key.

Now I have a related question. I reinstalled windows on a different machine and it never prompted me to put in the product key. I used a WinXP pro cd from a dell computer and installed it on a dell laptop. I thought those cd's from dell would work on any dell and then you just had to put the product key in after the install when you activated windows.

 

The Dell disc should only be used on the Dell computer it was shipped with. There are many reasons for this, mainly the Dell disc contains an image of Windows XP that includes specific drivers and hardware information for the model Dell it was shipped with. I'm not saying it will not work on any other Dell but it's not recommended as it causes licensing issues, potential driver confliction and sometimes even activation issues.

 

Ok, well then how do I get xp pro installed without having the original cd. I have downloaded a copy of xp from a torrent site and tried that, but apparently that was a volume licence because that didn't prompt me for a key and it has one there.

 

unfortunately if you don't have the xp retail disk then you cannot get it installed you have to purchase another copy. however if you have the product key borrow the disk from someone and when it ask for your product key enter it. Once you go online to register it , ms should recognize the previous install for that machine and accept it, if not call the 800number and speak to a rep they will probably give you a manual code to type in.
