hope this isnt too garbled a question...

is there any way I can tinker with windows so that the "My Documents" folder can be stored on a different partition?

at the moment, I click on save, and automatically it saves to My docs on c: unless I tell it otherwise - what I basically want to know is if I can shortcut this process and get it to automatically save in D:

or is this a "tinker with the settings in each bit of software" kind of issue?

You have an icon on the desktop or in the start bar, right click it, select properties, in that window you have 'Target:' select 'Move' and apply
    TRP :)
