Can anyone give me instructions on downgrading XP Pro to Home? I realize that the best method is reformatting the hdrive but something that tells me that there MUST be a method to do this. I realize that method isn't going to be easy but give it to me anyway if you've got it.

    Thanks a million

PS. I get the impression that many people believe that it is dumb to downgrade from Pro to Home. So please don't tell me its dumb or "why would you want to?" lol.(Thanks in advance)

Please trust me on this one... Reformatting is not the "BEST" method - it is the ONLY method!

Whatever "something tells you" or whatever your instincts are, I can tell you categorically that there is absolutely NO WAY to safely do this - "downgrade" from XP Pro to XP Home, without reformatting, that is. There may be a few loony websites out there that will suggest ways of doing this but I would never in a million years recommend doing this though, because it can get REALLY messy.

If you do decide to try this you will have severe problems; I guarantee it. Also try a web search using the search terms "XP Pro to Home." You will not find a single person who tried to downgrade from XP Pro to XP Home and successfully accomplished this. You will also see that the few who tried it then lived to regret it.

The only SAFE way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path or technique. Even though reformatting and doing a clean install is a hassle; it will be far less of an inconvenience than trying to perform a downgrade; which likely will lead to days and even weeks of frustration on your part.

Microsoft appears to have gone way out of its way to make it impossible to accomplish this downgrade from XP Pro to Home and still safely retain your system structure, programs, documents, etc. Unfortunately, there is no other way but to clean install the original legal copy of Home; because XP Pro simply will not "downgrade." Before removing the copy of XP Pro, save all the data you can, such as documents, email messages, etc to CD, DVD or CDRW. Backup everything that you want to save and start over with a fresh, clean install of XP Home

Most reputable sites such as the ElderGeek.com suggest a clean install in any case; because whenever installing one version of Windows over the top of another – even just a legit regular upgrade – (rather than a clean install) can be problematic and even when it is done “right” tends to cause all sorts of problems.

Sorry for jumping in here, but I am a little curious as to why you wish to downgrade ? Are you having specific problems with Pro ? Perhaps we could find a solution to these problems without downgrading.

If you REALLY do need to downgrade then please believe compuable, the only way is to format.

I didn't say its dumb... I'm just curious as to the reason ;)
