    Hi

    Windows EFS:

I have an encrypted area of my HDD which isn’t allowing me to decrypt the files. I received the following error message, when I attempt to decrypt.

    Error Applying Attribute

An Error occurred applying attributes to the file:

    file name

    Access is denied.

Any suggestions? I’m able to encrypt/decrypt other files.

    TIA

Did you perhaps encrypt the file using another profile on your machine? If so, that could explain the error. Try logging in as that user and decrypting.

    A shot in the dark....

Do you have file permissions to these files? As in security permissions (I.E. Full Control)?

yup i have full control access to the files and so does the system security account!!
    cheers

Another thing to check, (it gets me almost everytime), is the file permissions button on the sharing tab of the properties of the file. There's permissions defined there, too.

    Something to try http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308993&sd=tech

EFS is a PITA, I used it for a while and even created the DRA and Private Key backups and it still wouldnt let me in to 3 folders.

These files are not on a separate partition or HD are they and you have not re-installed windows again on the C: drive... just checking ;)

nope! haven't reinstalled the OS or anything sily, the files reside in a encrypted directory, i've taken off encryption at the root of the dir, and the system won't alow me access to certain files!...doh!!

    thanks!!!

Does any know how to use the recovery agent (or set a recovery agent policy) to restore the files? I’ve been trawling Google all day, and haven’t found any concise instructions.

On properties – General - advanced - details – of the files in question
My user account is list, I get an access denied error if I attempted to add other user! Plus “data recovery agents for this file as define by recovery policy,” is currently blank

    Big TIA

How to Remove Encryption from a File
Only the following people can decrypt an encrypted file.
    • The user who encrypted the file
    • Any user who was designated as a recovery agent before the file was encrypted
    • Any user who has the public key or private key for the recovery agent or the user that originally encrypted the file
    • Any user who has been granted access to the file

    LAME!

Encrypted files can be move with ntbackup, but only to NTFS drives. once moved the files are still encrypt with the user's private key!

just wondering if anyone has used a recovery agent to decrypt files, as i really need access to my files.....what a bugger!!!

    TIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my encryption/decryption keys are still functioning, it's just that i'm being denied access to certain files, where i have full control NTFS permissions
    TIA

There are a few recovery programs out there, BUT I have never ran into an issue like this to try it. None that I saw are free.

The recovery agent is apart of the OS, the errors that I receive are as if I don’t have NTFS permissions.
