    Hi

I would be grateful if anyone out there could help me.

I am running XP PRo on a laptop and a desktop. To the desktop I have a Cisco Systems Wireless G 2.4Ghz broadband router connected.

Using this system I have configured a secure wireless link and using both the desktop or laptop I can access the internet.

I would like to be able to transfer files between the laptop and the desktop and this is where I am falling over.

Now although I am not totally computer stupid, I find networks a little jargon heavy so please speak to me in complete numpty speak!!

Is it possible to be able to access the internet via the router from both machines AND be able to transfer files between machines?

    If so how??

I have shared the drives on both machines and when I look in the explorer, I can't even see the machine that I am looking on displayed, let alone the opposite machine!!

Please help - I'm sure that to you peeps this is a doddle but its driving me nuts!!

    Thanks in advance!

I have tried to follow these guides and still don't seem to be making a lot of progress...

I can ping the router from both laptop and desktop correctly.

I cannot ping the laptop from the desktop or visa-versa.

I tried disconnecting my modem in case because it was connected to that network it couldn't assign to a different network but still I don't seem to be getting anywhere.

If I look on the router when connected to the internet I can see the following:

    Destination LAN IP>>>>>Subnet Mask>>>>>Gateway>>>>>Interface
    202.105.106.1>>>>>255.255.255.255>>>>>0.0.0.0>>>>>WAN (Internet)
    192.168.1.0>>>>>>>255.255.255.0>>>>>>>0.0.0.0>>>>>LAN & Wireless
    0.0.0.0>>>>>>>>>>>0.0.0.0>>>>>>>>>>202.105.106.1>>WAN (Internet)

IP address 192.168.1.100 is assigned to the desktop
IP address 192.168.1.101 is assigned to the laptop

Its the jargon thats killing me, as I say, simple to you guys but over my head!

Since both are pulling an IP, and they both can browse the Internet, I would not worry about that.

What Firewall software are you using on your machines, along with do you have "Simple File Sharing" enabled on both under Folder Options, along with File & Printer Sharing?

I have found making sure that "Windows Firewall/ICS" in Services being Enabled and started works for me.

Might need to install "client for MS networks" as well. Just a guess though.

Both machines are running Norton Firewall (albeit different versions).

Simple File sharing is enabled on both machines
File and Printer sharing... if that is the "Network sharing and Security, share this folder on the network" then yes it is selected

Windows Firewall is enabled in services but disabled in software as Norton is running (was led to believe that the two would conflict)

Client for Microsoft networks is installed.

Try disabling both firewalls. Can you ping them now?

    SP2, with all updates?

Thats it! Both firewalls were preventing the other machine from getting through. Once I added the other machine as an authorised link everything sprang into life! Thanks very much to everyone for their kind help!

I am currently have a similar problem.....

I am running WinXP Pro with an internal NIC card by RealTek....

My Original OS was WinXP Home and was having no problems until I used Gateways restore disk....A week later I am having to reformat my harddrive which then deleted my partition and now I have everything I want except for the recognition of a "Network Controller" on my laptop. I have tried several drivers and nothing is working except for whatever it recognizes on my laptop. Now I do know that after a network diagnostic scan my card is picking up connection, but it is not letting me know what networks are available....so i think that once I get the network controller issue out of the way everything will be fine but I have no idea how to fix it and I have been having this issue for 2 days now....

    Please Help....thanks!!!!!
