    Hello major Geeks,
Xp wont boot on my desk top. I get a code of
    stop 0x0000007b (0xbacc7524,0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).
I have tried to repair it with my install CD. The Cd loads the files and goes to reboot and I get the same blue screen of death. I have gone into the Windows Recover Console and ran Fixboot but that also ends with the same results.
Please, can any one help. Out side the GUI environment, I'm as lost as they come.

    Roger

    Hi,

I don't really have a solution just want to see if the recovery console is seeing your files.
    Go to recovery console.
At the prompt type cd C:\ and then hit <enter>
Your prompt should then be C:\>. Type dir and then hit <enter>
Do you get a list of files including "Windows" folder and "Program Files" folder?
If so then go ahead and type chkdsk /r at the C:\ prompt. This will check your files system for errors.
    Type exit when done.

If your computer is a store bought model then give the model number in your next post so we can see the type of HD.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I can see all the files on the C drive as well as the other 2 drives that are installed. Although some Dir's will not allow access though the recovery console, I can see that they are there. I did run chkdsk /p on the c drive and found nothing. I will try chkdsk /r and see what comes up. Will repost if any thing comes of it.

OK ... ran CHKDSK /r..took forever . Found and repaired 2 bad sectors. All I need now is a direction to go from here.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I'm not really sure where to go from here. Error 7b is a problem with the boot device. That can mean a problem accessing the HD (mechanical) or a problem with the boot files. Since the recovery console could read the HD and there were a couple of bad sectors that could mean that it is those unfortunately placed sectors that are causing the problem.

Two questions is this a SATA HD? Did you have Recovery Console installed as a boot option or were you running it off CD?

I'm guessing it is both SATA and RC was installed as a boot option. If that is true then maybe setting the HD to IDE emulation in BIOS would allow the XP CD to load up fully and let you try a repair install?

Guess it won't start in safe mode, you could try a system restore from the Recovery Console..

    or

Could also try a Linux Live CD and mount the drive with the Windows OS on it to get access. The Recovery Console can be intimidating, but so can Linux... : )
Here I would probably mount the drive with a Linux live CD, copy anything I wanted to save to an external HDD and reinstall XP, if I hadn't already reinstalled recently.rolleyes
