I am having a problem, hopefully somebody will know what it is, and help me. I have a box that popped up, and will not go away. It is a large black box with a blue border. Inside the box it has an icon of a speaker, volume. The top of the box says Volume. Below that it has a negative graph that goes to positive. I just turned up my speaker volume when this occured. I have Bose speakers. This is not the speaker icon from the bottom right startup box on the monitor. I cannot get rid of it with a restart, it stays in safe mode. I cannot lower volume and it goes away. I cannot click on the box. If I move the mouse to it, it moves under the box. Does anyone have an idea concerning this? I have tried removing cookies, adware scans, spybot, registry cleaner etc...nothing seems to get rid of it.
    Please advise.

Can you take a screen dump of it to show us?

Anything that you see on screen should show on a screen dump

Print screen > Paste into paint > Save > Upload

I did a screen dump...it does not show up. Weird. Ive never seen anything like this. I think the fact you cant click on it is the reason. The mouse goes under the box.

    Hmmm that's pretty strange.

When it's showing on screen, do a control + alt + delete, go to processes, then sort by user and can you take a screen dump of what shows up under your user name?

Then we can see if there's any strange processes there.

well I dont have WORD to copy it to. I copied it to AbiWord, and it showed everything under processes. The problem is the print is not legible. I dont know how to enlarge it.

Ok, I figured out how to enlarge it. But I got an error trying to attach the file (AbiWord) to this message.

Paste it into paint, and upload it to something like imageshack or photobucket.

That looks like it could be monitor based, try going through the functions on your monitor. Does your monitor have built in speakers?

The monitor is a HP vs15 and I use additional BOSE speakers. (2)

Ok, I checked the speaker wires....the only speakers connected are the BOSE, the monitor speaker wires are disconnected.
Maybe that will help. The Bose speakers are plugged into the tower.

Check the volume functions on the monitor, I'm willing to bet it's related to that.

Yeh that's a point, you never did that!

I tried to edit out the modem wire ...but dont see how to do it sense posts have been made past that point. For future reference...the MONITOR wire for the monitor speakers is what I meant to type in. Sorry for any problem or confusion on that.

I didn't use the computer for about two hours last night. I didn't shut it down. Then as I moved the mouse, to activate the screen....the volume box disappeared. Very strange. I decided to call Microsoft about the problem. I wonder if this is some type of bug in the software. I just want you to know how much I appreciate your help, and the time you spent trying to help me. I will let you know what Microsoft says. I have a feeling this isn't over yet. :)

Right click the taskbar ...properties / if hide inactive icons is not selected...select it ...then hit customize ...you should have a list of all the icons in the tray.

Thanks, it was already set up that way.
Well I got the call back from Microsoft. Nobody there has seen this issue either. Since the volume box disappeared, they cannot trace it. So they sent me to a windows support guy who says I need to wipe hd and start over. I dont want to do that. Will see if it comes back, and when it does I will have them look at computer again. The first guy was able to do a hijack this log, and look at settings...he couldn't find the source of the problem. So, this is a real mystery. My BOSE speakers do not have software with them, if they did......that might be the problem. Thanks for all the suggestions, and support here.

Keep an eye on it and bump up this thread if it occurs again :)
