I have owned this used Dell Lat CPx for about 3 months , it has a p3 448mhz 192mb ram, CDROm, 56k modem, ethernet 10/100.
Every so often I go to save as and the drop down freezes and i get the not responding after several seconds, then if I wait i'll get the new tree with the wrong contents, the after a few more seconds all is right. But then I say save as this or that file and it freezes again like it's lost and cannot locate the files or a buffer fills??
I have defragged and this seems to cure it although the above is still slow. Is there some setting for memory thyat I should adjust or is my new baby a sicky.
    thanks for your help..

Your computer meets the requirements for Windows XP, but it's pretty close. With a system like that, I would not be surprised to see some slow downs if you are using some memory intensive programs.

Someone else smarter than me can probably give you a better answer though.

I would say processor, without a doubt. I doont think I would install XP on anything less then a 1 gig processor, but thats me, a 500 mhz is way too slow.

The last tip above this, disabling services and startup items is your best bet. Do a ctrl alt delete and see what processes are eating the most cpu and ram.

HHMM... well I used that processor monitor graph and it shows less than 5% even while the system is chunking away trying to show my dropdown. I have no problem opening any application just a few seconds.
It is just when I try to "save as" I click the "save in" drop down arrow and sometimes nothing happens for 60 secs, or I get the"not responding" message, however if I wait another minute or two I get the tree but then I try to save and it takes another couple of minutes to do anything.
Other times I get the tree choice in the window below within a second or two.
WheneverI have this problem thetreare no major applications running, usually Outlook ex press and web browser tops.
I just tried to save this page and it took about asecond and no problem.....
    Bloody frustrating...
thanks for all your help guys

Have you ran a virus scan?

Have you defragmented your hard drive?
