XP Repair problem

We had a problem on a pc and were told to try an XP repair, however I haven't got the registration key so need to cancel the repair in order to use a key viewer before continuing.

Can this be done?

If not is there anyway to retrieve the key during the setup process or by making the hdd a slave in another machine?
