    Hi

Completly remove all Java versions you have in Add/Remove and some steps to take are here including using the Windows Installer Cleanup Util to also remove any old Sun Java installers as these can hamper you installing an updated version http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml

Once uninstalled, run a junk cleaning tool like CCleaner adn run its Cleaner and registry cleaning options ( do run the registry one at least 3 times as it will once first set of old entries are removed highlight older ophaned ones )

Then try installing the full latest Java Runtime
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html ( remember to do this from the admin account )

However, your described symptoms seem to be varied, so can you explain them in more detail, as a slow pc doesnt necassarily mean its the fault of Java.

Cannot get anything to work right? in what contexts, just installing Java or other issues with other software, websites etc

If you have been getting any error messages when installing Java or with any of your other isuses, please tell us what they are?

Have you scanned for malware if so was any found and if so what was it?

With you running an older version of XP with only SP1 installed, their maybe some software or sites ( add-ons ) that wont work unless you upgrade to at least SP2.

Very aware of the two JAVAs from MSFT and SUN, but as the OP mentions that in CP they have a Java reference and Microsofts Java VM control was iirc not listed as icon in CP but in Internet Options > Advanced menu I would go with Sun Java and possibly a left over installer halting any updates.

Both would work ok together ( still have both installed on old XP PC ), but rule of thumb is to remove the older not as secure MSFT Java VM and install Suns Runtime.

However genso would need to asnwer my questions and clean install steps for Java before I could post a concete answer on whats going wrong.
