I have the new service pack 2 and norton antivirus and internet security, my question is whenever I disable my antivirus and firewall I keep getting the security alerts from my norton program saying that my computer is at risk and you must enable it over and over again..But sometimes you want it disabled like when installing drivers etc..I went to the symantec website but they don't post anything about this...I disabled the notices from windows but the norton one keeps popping up, it really gets on your nervous. I think it also disrupts your work or installation..Has anyone else had this problem??and has anyone been able to repair this???

    Thanks,
    Bee

    Hopefully someone has a solution??

You're going about it backwards, Bee.

First, disable the Windows firewall in the Security Center and disable all warnings. Then kill the Security Center Service in your Services list (right-click My Comp > Manage > Services, and scan down to Security and stop it and disable it), and then make sure that your NORTON firewall and anti-virus are running and will run at boot.

You don't wanta try to kill NORTON anything in favor of Windows something. Norton will fight to the death to be the one that's active, and will scream bloody murder every time you try to squelch it.

Hi Bee :) Being a devil's advocate here. Are you stuck on norton (which many of us here on MG feel is a giant pain in the . . . head.) or would another --smaller, less piggy -- set of apps that do a better job than norton does work for you? If so you might want to look at this thread: remove norton and this one
Then take a close look at the programs listed here
    and here

I reccommend paying close attention to the proggies marked "Hot." Those are the popular ones.
If you want to learn the pros and cons of each program from the members of this forum's point of view just use the "search" button at the top of the page. You'll get an eyefull of why each has its fans and detractors :)

The only reason I'm stuck on Norton is the parental controls for the kids it works really well, I don't think anything else is as good at this for blocking sh*t from popping up on my kids...I'll try the first fix and report back!!

    Thanks for all the help.

Most newsletter suggest turning the SP2 XP security settings off and to continue to use 3 rd. software. From what I have read the security centre is morw to protect the newbies to computers whilst they are learning the ropes.
