Ok i donwnloaded windows service pack 2 to take and install on and unconnected pc. I have run into a problem. when i double click the exe it runs and starts expanding files. One that is done it goes away and doesn't launch the install. I tried this on another pc it worked fine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could cause this and what i can do to fix the problem?

make the pc that is not allowing the install is using a legitmate key. The SP2 installation will check against known pirated keys and cease installation if one if found.

It is using the Key that came with the computer. I have tried it on another computer running XP pro as well and it will not complete. These two computers are at home. the install works on my comp at work but not on eather comp at home. One is connected to the internet via a dialup but is unable to install sp2 via windows update as well. Very confusing to me as to why this is happening.

The accounts you are installing under are admin accounts?

I think you read him wrong Kodo.

If memory serves me right, the same thing happened to me after I burned a copy and tried to run it. That was with SP1. When I copied it, I copied it from the wrong folder. Maybe that is what happened?

After the extract, can you copy the extracted files before they are erased automaticaly? In the other pc,can you do the same? Can you install from this copied folder?
And try in safe mode with admin.

    XPsp2.exe/Xpath
Extracts service pack files to the path folder without prompting and without starting
    Update.exe.

This is a command line option

Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

Sublevel4-Did you get to the restart step?Or does it not even launch update.exe?

It never starts the update. It goes throught the extract and then goes away and deletes the folder. Its to quick to copy the folder. I have not tried a safemode install yet but that was my next thought. I just wanted to try and figure out what would be causing this so that i can fix that to.

Use command line to extract the sp2 into a folder using /x command following the file name.eg"sp2.exe/x"
