I'm trying in install XP Home on my older laptop that had 98 on it. It crashed, so I decided that this was the best time to do it. When I try to install XP, I get error code 4 which is File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. After reading about it on Microsoft's site, it says that the cause is damaged hardware and to remove PCI cards and then try. Being a laptop, there's not too much hardware to remove. So, I removed the wlan adapter and the battery. No luck. Any thoughts?

Its also possible that the XP CD is dirty, or damaged as well.

    Have you checked it?

I thought of that also. I tried a friend's CD too and the same thing happens. Also, I had a 98 SE disk. I thought that if I would install 98 first and then upgrade to XP, the problem would be solved. But, during the first parts of the 98 setup after it runs scandisk, I get errors and it says that it must restart the computer. I have also run fdisk and formatted the C:. Any thoughts?

    FAT16 or FAT32?
Microsoft Windows 98SE works better on FAT32.

If you have a Retail full install of windos XP,,,I would try to do a complete format FDISK and then do a clean install,,,keep in mind that you need your system disks to recover drivers or make sure you attain the full set of drivers for your laptop before you attempt any of this !!!!

I tried my 200 Pro. disk just now. It will load all of the setup drivers. But when setup says that it is starting Windows, the machine reboots. I'll try another fdisk and format now. I used FAT32. btw. Any help?
